I understand from a reliable source that the Italian Government has apparently withdrawn its recent proposal to encourage the reporting of antiquities in private hands. Apparently, the Italian archaeological lobby is just as strong as the American one. The shame is that Italy knows its system is broken, particularly given severe budget constraints, but reform nonetheless remains elusive in the face of determined opposition. In the meantime, Italy remains full of hidden antiquities.
