So Much for Cooperation: Greek Cypriots Let Suspected Russian Spy Escape

It has been suggested that the US State Department and US law enforcement should be keen to support broad declarations of foreign ownership over cultural goods as a quid pro quo for assistance in other areas. If so, US Government officials may want to think twice before going to the mat for Cyprus after that country let an accused Russian spy escape custody. See http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/01/AR2010070100843.html

Russia has strong political and economic links to Cyprus. These were apparently stronger than any "good will" that may have been generated by the 2007 renewal of the MOU with Cyprus and its extention to common artifacts like coins.
