Greek Archaeologists Out of Touch

The New York Times reports that Greek archaeologists are slow to recognize the financial reality of a bankrupt Greek Government.  I've previously blogged about their poster campaign which does absolutely nothing to advance necessary reforms of a system that can no longer assume (if it ever could) that the Greek State and its State Funded archaeologists should monopolize control over all ancient artifacts within Greek borders in order to "protect them."

  1. Who protects the archaeological sites in your country Mr Tompa? What are the effects? Four Corners?

  2. I'm not sure that is relevant. We don't have our hands out to the EU to bail us out. And we don't tell other countries to restrict entry of our artifacts because we are the "best" to protect them. What exactly is your suggestions to help get Greece out of this mess? More of the same? A blank check because Greek patrimony "is importat to us all?"

  3. On the contrary, you are apparently suggesting another nation do something "the American Way" (ie a way accomodating the needs of US collectors) - so what is the American way?

Who protects the archaeological sites in your country Mr Tompa? What are the effects?

Funny how you sometimes want to depict the United States of Europe as a mirror of the USA (when you are talking of trade between EU countries) but now when it suits your purpose suddenly it is "Greece versus the EU". Which is it?

I think culture should receive adequate funding. Allowing the erosion of culture leads to the destruction of roots, don't you agree?
